Power of the Pen
Power of the Pen was developed in 1986 and became a non-profit educational organization in 1989 for the state of Ohio. Schools participate from more than 80 counties in Ohio. Power of the Pen includes 2 interscholastic writing tournaments (district and regional competitions) and one state competition. Students compete and receive recognition and awards for excellence in three rounds of impromptu writing. Teachers from other schools provide immediate feedback for each of these rounds of writing, and awards for best of round, individual placement and team trophies are given the same day as the competition.
The Academy of St. Bartholomew has a seventh and eighth grade team who meet weekly to practice for the District tournament at St. Joseph Academy, January 23, 2010. The top 50% who compete from this tournament will be invited to compete in the Regional tournament, March 13, 2010 at Heskett Middle School. The top 20% will be invited to compete in the State competition in May.
The eighth grade team is coached by Mrs. Edmonds and consists of: Carly Fuerst, Katherine Coughlin, Reece Gryzbowski, Sarah McKim, Lindsay Fischer, and Tori Charvat. Avery Porco and Leah Mehwald are official alternates who will accompany the team to the district competition.
The seventh grade team is coached by Mrs. Kocinski and consists of: Ariana Cucci, Mary Papandreas, Kristen Mey, Emily Kent, Halle Stelbasky, and Jacalyn Everhart. Alicia Cristino and Nicole Smith are official alternates who will accompany the team to the district competition.
